July 2007

The fishing is very good on Lake Texoma and the temptation to take an undue advantage can get you in some legal tangles.

Tip 1:  We were visiting a local watering hole over the weekend and listened to a story of some fishermen who got nabbed for having more than 2 over 20 inch long stripers in their possession.  Right now, when you find them, you often get more than the 2 allotted 20 + inchers.  Don't let the temptation to keep them get to you as these unfortunate guys did.  The Game Wardens were actually pretty lenient on them and only hot them with citations for two over 20 inch fish apiece, word was they had 16 or 17 on their possession.   At $150 a fish the fine can add up quickly and the Game Wardens can confiscate your boat and equipment if they think you are not being honest with them.  Some guides will let you fall in this trap and you need to remember that you too will be held liable if caught.  So with fewer numbers of boats on the water, your chances of being checked may be higher.

Tip 2:  as you know most at most ramps and marinas you will see signs saying "No Launch", No Tresspassing", etc.  They ramp/marina owners aren't kidding.  You can get ticketed/arrested for tresspassing if you choose to sneak around them.  Really not worth the effort.

It has been several weeks since my last fishing report. I shut my boat down for a few weeks due to the high water. I mentioned in my last report the debris in the lake and took my own advice and stayed off the lake.

  I started fishing again on July 16th. Finding a place to launch my boat has been a big problem. I have had numerous calls and emails the last week with the same question. "Where's an open ramp to launch my boat?" Right now I don't know of any marina who has their ramps open and I personally think it will be mid August before many of the ramps are useable.

Fishing has been a lot of work during this month at Lake Texoma. Had to cancel some trips because of the high water, loss of electricity, and dangers of floating debris. The water trickled over the spillway, but is now going down gradually. Those that chose to "weather the storm" had a lot of fun, and caught good fish. Robt and Sara Kaska, did well for three days, with "her" big fish going around 8-9#, and she missed the big one. Threw lots of over 20s back. It is now time to consider that upcoming summer outing, with a little inconveniences of getting in the boat at the bank, fishing is great! Lots of top water, some bait, and a little long-lining at times.  Call me (vacation August 4th)  but lots of dates open now…..."JD"

A question was recently sent to us regarding the use of the sales pitch used by some of Lake Texoma striper guides guaranteeing that you will catch Fish.  Do a search on Google for "Lake Texoma striper fishing guide" and then look at the Sponsored Links and visit their web sites you will often find phrases such as:
*   "Guaranties fish or your next trip is free"
*   "Guaranteed Catch"
*   "Catch fish or your money back"
*   "We catch fish. Guaranteed"

Before you book a trip ensure you are getting what you want to have a fun fulled day fishing.  Ask questions such as "What does Guarantee to catch Fish" mean.

Not to say that these guides aren't very good guides and that you won't catch fish, but….. fish is used as the singular and plural tenses. "Yooohooo, I caught a fish.",  "We caught a box full of fish".

We have heard reports of guides on bad fishing days, holding customers to the guarantee once they caught "ONE" fish.

We also know of some guides that are true to their word and will take you out another time if fishing is so bad you spend 5-6 hours to catch 3-4 fish.  Some guides also will refish you for a reduced price.

Another area to ask about is the time you are allotted to fish.  Most guides specify this on their web sites and will tell you if asked.  Ask what happens should you catch your limit in an hour and you would like to fish some more.  Some will wisk you immediately back to the marina, others will take you catfishing, etc.  Once you have caught your limit of stripers you can't keep fishing for them, but there are alternatives.

Take your time and look at several of the guide's web sites , don't be afraid to go 2-3  pages deep in the search.  There are numerous guides that don't do the Sponsored Link program that are excellent guides but for one reason or another choose not to advertise as a Sponsored Link

Remember you are the customer and as any other purchase you make, know what you are getting before you get in the boat.

The Elks in Sherman Texas is holding a Benefit on August 11th for our friends at The American Legion Post 231 on Lake Texoma.  The American Legion Post was inundated with water during the early July 2007 Lake Texoma flood.

Fishing report Mid July:   Well we have been out of business for a couple weeks because of flooding,  and unable to get electricity to boathouses and cabins at Little Mineral.   We have had some sparing times at fishing,  and getting good results,  lots of fish fast,  and also fish in the 17-18 pounds.   The marina has opened back up.

Visit JD's website at http://striperfish.com for more info and available dates.

With Lake Texoma flooded, a great way to spend some quality summer fun is a few days at a Bed & Breakfast.  We have reviewed the many B&B's in the Lake Texoma area and are really impressed with Pappy's Paradise.

We apologize for the lack of posts, but have been extremely busy due to the flooding of the lake.  The pictures paint a tragic story for those around the shoreline of texoma.  Our friends at The American Legion Post 231  have been keeping a pretty good daily diary of the flooding they are encountering.  Go to http://al231.com/flood07/index.html to check out their pictures.  The local TV stations have viewer submitted pictures posted on their web sites.  KTEN pictures can be found at http://www.kten.com/Global/category.asp?C=92107&nav=menu410_4_15  or by going to http://kten.com highlighting the weather link on the left menu bar and clicking Pictures from KTEN WeatherWatchers.    KXII has a live web cam of the spillway on their homepage, http://www.kxii.com/ They also have viewer submitted photos.  The Herald Democrat has some pictures of the early days of the flood at  http://www.heralddemocrat.net/gallery/main.php

 If you have additional sources or would like to share your photos, please do so and we will share them with the world.
